Katarina Witt started to ice skate at the age 5 years. Her natural talents began to show her admission was granted into an Karl-Marx-Stadt school that is geared towards children who have a sporting aptitude. It was here that she met the coach of her choice, Jutta Muller. Breakthrough year Witt's breakthrough came in 1982 when she came second at the World Championships in Copenhagen. In the years since, Witt's grace and beauty have captivated all the attention of people. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt won a close fought contest to win the women's figure skating gold medal. The winner of the competition was a more competitive race after four years. Although she lost in the free-skating contest, gold was awarded for her performance on the compulsory figures as well as the short program. Witt was the first female to win in both male and female figure skating in the past since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was capable of returning to figure skating after her success in the film industry as an actor. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Though she failed to get a single medal she delighted fans with the fact that she finished seventh. Witt got her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame on the 15th of April, 1995.
